General rules to import pets to india
- AS PER CUSTOMS CIRCULAR NO: 15/2013 The owner should have stayed aboard for last two years – This is applicable for both Indian And Foreign nationals.
- In case, the owner had come into India and stayed during the last two years for any purpose, the total number of days stayed, over the last 2 years, should not exceed 180 days all together.
- Should be coming to India on Transfer of Residence basis – t his is applicable for both Indian and Foreign nationals.
- Should be coming on ‘E” – Employment Visa. No one having “B” Or “T” visa is eligible to bring pets into India – This is applicable only for Foreign Passport holders of non-Indian Origin. This is applicable only for Foreign Passport holders of non-Indian Origin. For Foreign Passport holders of Indian Origin, holding Valid PIO 0r OCI card, Employment visa is not required. It is not applicable to Indian Passport holders.
- Should come to stay in India for a minimum period of 2 years. The minimum stay is not explicitly specified anywhere but most of the Animal Quarantine Officers (A.Q.) follow this period. Pet owners of Indian origin, should provide Sufficient and convincing reasons for their return to India and you may be asked to produce documentary evidences to prove that they are not coming on short visit but coming back for good or would be staying for two years or more in India.
- Only two pets are allowed per person- Only pet dogs and cats are allowed to be brought into India by the owner who complies with these regulations. Import of all other pet animals are subject to Special Import Authorisation to be issued by Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
